# InkStory

> InkStory carries the sound behind your tattoo — a voice, a song, a moment. Design a tattoo from audio, find an artist in a directory of 1,400+ tattoo studios across 57+ countries, then scan the finished ink to hear the audio play back. Works with any existing tattoo, not just ones made through InkStory.
>
> **How it works technically:** On-device image recognition (no cloud matching). The photo of the tattoo and the linked audio both stay on the user's phone. InkStory doesn't sync them between devices, and a device restore isn't promised to carry them over, so users should keep their own copy of the audio. Playback doesn't depend on InkStory hosting the audio.
>
> **What's on the site:** a designer that turns an audio clip into three tattoo-ready waveform shapes (/design), a directory of tattoo artists compiled from public Instagram profiles (/artists), editorial articles on meaningful tattoo topics (/ideas), a tattoo-style glossary backed by artist-tag data from the directory (/styles), demo tattoos anyone can scan (/demo), and an About page with the founder story (/about).
>
> **Who built it:** Sergey Zelenov, solo dev, bootstrapped. Co-founder of javascript.info. First launched on Product Hunt in 2024; website and content rebuilt in 2026 around a four-step flow — design → find artist → ink → scan. No venture funding. Pricing: free install + trial (15 scans, one tattoo), one-time $6.99 in-app purchase for unlimited scans, no subscription tier.

## Product

- [Soundwave tattoo generator](https://inkstory.app/design.md): free, runs in the browser, no account: turn an audio clip (MP3, WAV, M4A) or a demo track into three tattoo-ready waveform shapes (Pulse, Wave, Radial). Select and play back the moment to draw, adjust bar count, thickness, spacing, and proportions, and download the design as SVG or PNG to take to an artist. The audio is processed on the device and never uploaded. A share link or QR code carries the design only, not the sound
- [About](https://inkstory.app/about.md): what InkStory is, how the full funnel (design → discover → ink → scan) works, why it's built local-first, how it started
- [Demo tattoos](https://inkstory.app/demo.md): sample tattoos to scan with the InkStory app and hear playback before getting inked

## Styles

- [Tattoo Styles](https://inkstory.app/styles): style glossary backed by the InkStory artist directory
- [Illustrative tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/illustrative.md): Illustrative tattoos read like a drawing from a sketchbook or storybook, combining line weight variation, loose shading, and personal subject matter.
- [Blackwork tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/blackwork.md): Blackwork tattoos use only black ink, often with heavy solid fills and bold geometric or illustrative forms.
- [Realism tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/realism.md): Realism tattoos reproduce a photograph or lifelike subject using heavy shading, tonal gradients, and minimal black outlines.
- [Fine Line tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/fine-line.md): Fine-line tattoos use a single-needle setup to draw delicate, continuous lines — minimal shading, no colour fills, and a precise, drawn-on-paper feel.
- [Neo-traditional tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/neo-traditional.md): Neo-traditional tattoos extend American traditional with broader colour palettes, richer shading, and modern illustrative subjects while retaining bold outlines.
- [Lettering tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/lettering.md): Lettering tattoos render text — scripts, quotes, single words — as the primary subject, in a typeface chosen for meaning and placement.
- [Geometric tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/geometric.md): Geometric tattoos use precise shapes — triangles, circles, polygons, sacred-geometry forms — arranged into symmetric or fractal compositions.
- [Japanese (Irezumi) tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/japanese.md): Japanese traditional (irezumi) tattoos cover large body areas with koi, dragons, phoenixes, flowers, and wind-and-water backgrounds, using flat colour and curvilinear composition.
- [Dotwork tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/dotwork.md): Dotwork tattoos build shading and pattern from thousands of individual dots rather than solid fills or lines, producing a pointillist texture.
- [Minimalist tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/minimalist.md): Minimalist tattoos reduce a subject to a few essential lines, often on a small scale, with no shading or colour beyond black.
- [Traditional (American) tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/traditional.md): Traditional American tattoos use bold black outlines, a limited saturated colour palette, and iconic subjects — anchors, roses, swallows, hearts — passed down through the Sailor Jerry lineage.
- [Watercolour tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/watercolour.md): Watercolour tattoos mimic the wash-and-bleed of watercolour paint — soft edges, drips, splatters, and colour gradients without hard outlines.
- [Micro-realism tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/micro-realism.md) (directory page): Micro-realism tattoos render photorealistic detail at small scales — palm-sized portraits, tiny landscapes, miniature objects — using single-needle precision.
- [Tribal tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/tribal.md): Tribal tattoos descend from Polynesian, Māori, Marquesan, and other indigenous traditions — bold black linework and solid fills built around symbolic motifs specific to the originating culture.
- [Ignorant Style tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/ignorant.md) (directory page): Ignorant-style tattoos are deliberately crude, childlike, or amateurish — rough lines, off-center placement, and subjects that read as scribbles by design.
- [Soundwave tattoos](https://inkstory.app/styles/soundwave.md): A soundwave tattoo is a visual representation of an audio waveform — the shape sound makes when rendered as an image, usually a short clip of a voice, a song, or a moment of audio that matters to the wearer.
